Running the Ragnar: Life on the Road

This past Friday and Saturday, I had the great pleasure of running this 200 mile road race from Wickenburg, AZ to Tempe, AZ with a group of 12 on our Expedition Team. What a time we had, and here goes.

Friday morning, Carolyn, Jordyn, and I get up and head out the door at about 4:45. We arrive in Tempe, drop Jordyn off at Caitlin’s with Roxy the lovable dog. Coffee and a good low cal breakfast sandwich from Einstein Bros and I’m ready for a long ride in a van. We meet up with our teams and jump in the vans and on the road to Wickenburg we go. Arrive in Wickenburg at Dunkin Donuts for coffee and another low cal sandwich. Head over to the start and Van 1 gets us going at 10:00. So in van 2, we have time to kill and of course we end up at Chipotle’s for more food. So far, I have taken in the calories without doing anything but lay around and wait to run. The six runners from Van 1 get finished and now Van 2 hits the road. Already tired my first leg begins around 5:00. It is lonely on the road, running through the heat. I don’t feel real strong and my leg of 4.9 miles starts slowly with me getting dropped off at the exchange late. So we lose a minute or so, and I have to run across the lot to get the baton and I am already thinking, “Tim, what are you thinking? Why do you do this?” I finish my leg running about 8:34 pace, disappointed and beat down. Back on the van for 3 more runners before we can rest again.

Anyhow, we hand over the running to Van 1 and cruise over to Tom’s place where his wife and mother-in-law have fixed us this incredible meal. Sleep slowly comes as they put Carolyn and I in a guest room while others hit the floor. Being the oldest on the team, I guess that warrants the guest room. Sometimes it pays to be old. Well we are already on the road by 2:00 a.m. and my next leg comes up of 3.3 miles and I actually get faster in the dark running 8:06 pace. 4:30 a.m. and I’m running. Nuts. Well we finish our legs and yes we eat again. I have never eaten this often. Probably gaining wait while running.

Our van driver’s parents live close to the route, so over we go for a short nap, before we have to be back in Fountain Hills to take the baton from Van 1. It gets warm in a hurry and I’m back running at 1:00 another 3.3 miles and this time, I crush it. 7:43 pace and that little slight down hill has me pumped. Our team has this goal of getting done by 4 which puts us at 30 hours. We suffer through injuries and I take over the final leg when one of our runner’s injuries is too much to overcome. I run close to 3 miles at a 8:40 pace which for me was ok because I was not quite ready to bring it. Anyhow we finish at 4:04 and the disappointment was big since we did not quite make our goal.

We did beat the other team from Payson and did ok overall about 45th of 200+ teams in our mixed division. So would I do it again? Oh yeh. I am sore, still tired, not recovered from lack of  sleep but I am glad I did it. Once again, hanging out with the team and getting to know others better and having those bonding experiences is enough to keep me going.

As my blog line says, I’m still running against the wind.

What I learned in church today

I know, I know, I’m sort of a slacker when comes to posting my thoughts on so many things. I always keep notes in church on what struck me as thought provoking. Our series titled The Reason has stimulated my thoughts but yet I failed to post my thoughts but today I’m doing it.

Going with the thought, “serve or be served” it is my thinking that we are all called to serve. Today’s scripture comes from Mark 10 32-45. Paraphrasing, Jesus is headed up to Jerusalem. Somewhere along the road, he tells of how He will be handed over to those powered, beaten, spit up on, etc, and killed but will rise again in three days. James and John are concerned about who is going to be in charge and who will sit on the right and left of Jesus. They are clearly thinking power. Jesus clearly states that those things aren’t important but what is important is serving others. ” So to make it perfectly clear, real leadership must involve serving others. It is not about being served. It is about giving oneself without worrying about personal gain and personal glory. I once did a research paper on servant leadership and it still rings true today.

But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Payson School District looks to cut electives

Reading the Payson Roundup can sometimes be most enlightening on local educational issues. http://www.paysonroundup.com/news/2012/feb/17/board-focuses-k-5-grades/

It is most ironic that the spin continues in an effort to lower expectations of academic progress. In reading the article, it appears that the board has not a clue on how to save and keep electives at the high school. Payson High School has a 6 period day allowing students to have 24 opportunities for credits in a four year period. If they would throw away the idea that you have to have this ridiculous old school mentality of having a 6 period day and embrace a block schedule where students could take 4 classes a day each semester and would have the ability to earn up to 8 credits a year instead of six. This could save electives. It is my opinion a way for administration to get rid of some specific teachers and programs.

In the Roundup from October 1, 2010 when then board president Rory Huff was running, the Roundup shares the following:

“Huff also wants to place more emphasis on the district’s vocational programs since he says a large percentage of students enter the work force as plumbers, electricians, carpenters and other trade professionals instead of occupations requiring a university diploma.

“I feel most of our efforts are spent getting students ready for college and a four-year degree,” Huff said.”

In the current article Huff is quoted, “He said the district should protect its core academic classes, even if that means limiting electives. “Maybe some of these other courses are going to have to fall by the wayside.”

In little time, this district and board continues to flip and flop not having any idea or plan to increase opportunities for students and to save valuable electives. And who continues to suffer? The students.

Rolling In The Deep by Adele

Adele has me all fired up about music. Album of the year, song of the year, on and on with six Grammys. Then to sing Rolling In The Deep. This woman had me in the palm of her hand. Nobody does it better then Adele.

“Rolling In The Deep”

There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, it’s bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ‘head and sell me out and I’ll lay your ship [shit] bare
See how I leave with every piece of you
Don’t underestimate the things that I will do

There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And it’s bringing me out the dark

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can’t help feeling
We could have it all
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside your hand
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it, to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

Baby, I have no story to be told
But I’ve heard one on you
And I’m gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Make a home down there
As mine sure won’t be shared

(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
The scars of your love remind me of us
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
I can’t help feeling
We could have had it all
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside your hand
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it, to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
Could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside your hand
But you played it, with a beating

Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
You’ll pay me back in kind and reap just what you’ve sown

(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
We could have had it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
It all, it all, it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

We could have had it all
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside your hand
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

We could have had it all
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You’re gonna wish you never had met me)

But you played it
You played it
You played it
You played it to the beat.

Born Free

I love Kid Rock’s newest album Born Free. For me it is sort of a spiritual journey for Kid as he tackles societal problems and comes up with some classic cuts. The title cut Born Free hits home with me. A song that really resonates with those of us who probably are edgy and don’t always conform to what society expects of us. It is sort of like a born again Kid Rock who acknowledges God throughout the album. The good news is the profanity rants no longer exist and in their place are intelligent lyrics that reflect Kid’s journey towards midlife. His Born Free lyrics are great.  You can knock me down and watch me bleed but you can’t keep no chains on me, I was born free

Born Free by Kid Rock

Fast on a rough road riding
High thru the mountains climbing
Twistin’, turning, further from my home

Young like a new moon rising
Fierce thru the rain and lightning
Wandering out into this great unknown

And I don’t want no one to cry
But tell ‘em if I don’t survive

I was born free
I was born free
I was born free
Born free

Free like a river raging
Strong as the wind I’m facing
Chasing dreams and racing Father Time

Deep like the grandest canyon
Wild like an untamed stallion
If you can’t see my heart you must be blind

You can knock me down and watch me bleed
But you can’t keep no chains on me

I was born free
I was born free
I was born free
Born free

And I’m not good at long goodbyes
But look down deep into my eyes
I was born free

Calm, facin’ danger
Lost, like an unknown stranger
Grateful for my time with no regrets

Close to my destination
Tired, frail and aching
Waiting patiently for the sun to set

And when it’s done, believe that I
Will yell it from that mountain high

I was born free
I was born free
I was born free
Born free

And I will bow to the shining seas
And celebrate God’s grace on thee

I was born free
I was born free
I was born free
Born free

Road Tripping

Sometimes the life of a high school basketball official can be a lonely one. Yesterday I drove 180+ miles one way to do an assigned basketball game in Flagstaff. It was a division 4 girls sectional basketball game. A number one seed vs a number 8 seed. The score at halftime was something like 40 to 11 and I have decided you know don’t make this a drudgery but live life and enjoy. So I just had fun. How, smile and enjoy the moment.

After the game, I’m thinking 180 miles back to Canyon Day? Oh Lord help me. It is times like these that you truly question why am I doing this? Ok, it got me to Flagstaff for 45 cent wings and some tasty porter from a local brewery and the opportunity to go to my favorite clearance type store: Marshall’s. I discovered a pair of $250 Mark Nason Italian boots that are made  of leather and genuine rubber bottoms. They were clearance for $39 and I grabbed them. I even found some great high end New Balance fleece jackets for $10 each.

My game was horrid but the shopping or rather spending was great. Passing time on the highway talking on the cell phone with family was helpful as well. I finally arrived in Canyon Day at 12:15 am and wired as can be resulting in little sleep. Close to a 400 mile round trip was maybe just worth it.
