What Christmas Means to Me

In an irreverent 1970’s SNL skit about Christmas, Steve Martin is asked, “Uncle Steve, What does Christmas mean to you?” His answer is quite a story and I have the audio for you to listen to. So with that in mind, anybody who knows me realizes that I am not a fan of Christmas. In fact I just can’t stand Christmas. Some may mistake me for Ebenezer Scrooge but Christmas has been a disappointment for me as long as I can remember. So here is my cynical look at what the reality of Christmas is for me. Don’t get mad, I’m just being honest.scrooge

Yes I know, Christmas is not to be about the getting but rather the giving. And of course it should  be about the birth of Christ but that seems to be placed somewhere on the shelf. Just was reading that something like 10% of the boomers go to church on a regular basis. In reality, Christmas has become a shopping holiday where retailers either make it or they don’t. They have a month to move the merchandise into your homes.

So if we could just go with the fact that there are probably many like me that just plain struggle with another holiday of disappointment. Maybe they won’t admit to it but you got to admit the idea of Santa bringing you what you might want, just doesn’t coincide with reality.

So when people ask me “What does Christmas mean to you?” I just shake my head and roll my eyes. I could take the higher ground and speak of the birth of Christ and talk of Christmas for what it was originally designed to be about but lets just cut to the chase. (Ok it is also about family, friends, but lets not forget about those shiny presents under the tree.)

Could that also be about overspending, feeding the addictions of buying on credit, keeping up with the neighbors, spending money you don’t have and probably never will have because you will pay for Christmas into next July and the cycle starts all over again. Well that isn’t me ‘cause I ain’t spending money I don’t have. But I am not stupid, many are sort of like the Federal Government where for every dollar you take in, you spend two. Go figure. Another wonderful example as we drop over the fiscal cliff.

That goofy movie with Tim Allen in Christmas with the Kranks might describe how I would like to spend a holiday. Some have said I sort of look like Mr. Krank. (aka Tooltime Tim) You can decide that but I probably do think a bit like Mr. Krank. Now my wife’s cousin Kevin and his wife figured it out and went to Cancun this year. Ok Kevin, I’m jealous I cannot deny.Krank

To be perfectly honest with you, I can’t really remember what I have ever received at Christmas. Most end up in the return section at the store anyhow. Current stats say close to 40% return things with the number one items returned being clothes.

Growing up, I can remember the Lincoln Logs, the Tinker Toys, and a H.O. Train as well as some farm set. And of course, I do really remember one when I was a kid where I got this really cool hockey game where you spun your hockey players around and hit this puck into a net. It was a table game and I remember it because when we took it to my grandparents, my uncles and cousins could not beat me. I was good. Those I remember.

Did I ever have a Christmas past my childhood to really remember? Of course, Christmas 1987. I remember it like it was yesterday. Living in Payson, it snowed and snowed that evening. Probably the last real white Christmas in Payson. That helped with the memories but what I remember it for was Carolyn and I let our families know that she was pregnant with our first child who would be born in July as Caitlin. It was a gift to them and one I will never forget. Now I have no idea what “presents” I received that year but surely there was socks and other things that I pretended to enjoy but my real enjoyment was knowing that we were about to become parents and we were able to share with our families. And about Christmas 1993, we were building our current house, living in a rental and Carolyn was pregnant with Jordyn. I remember that as well but sure can’t remember what I may have received as a gift that year.

So whether I am a Krank or Ebenezer’s brother, I have to say I am glad Christmas is done.

In the 1970’s, Steve Martin and Paul Simon did a parody of Silver Bells which in someways is just plain bad but I laugh for the right reasons every time I hear this song. There seems to be no original video to go with the show but at about a minute and 50 seconds into the song, when Steve is asked what Christmas means to him, he answers in the most bizarre ways possible. It really is something to hear so my “present” to you is this little off color gem filled with cynicism, bitter comments, and sarcasm from Steve on what Christmas means to him.  Bah humbug!

December 14, 2012–A date which will live in infamy

The unimaginable has happened. It is with a heavy heart and teared up eyes that I try to make sense of a tragedy that is unthinkable. To imagine that today a domestic act of terror in the killing of innocent children and school staff has occurred in the United States has rocked me to the core. To think that our one of our own citizens can wipe out a group of child and staff is beyond belief.

My thoughts are all over the place. I can and never will be able to make sense of a shooting of innocent students and staff at an elementary school.

As a father and as a person who made his living in public schools, I am especially grieved that this type of tragedy can occur in our country.

My prayers go out to those who will never  be able to hug a child again due to this act of insanity. Enough is enough. Something must be done and it must be done now. No excuses, no politics, no right, no left, no conservative, no liberal, no nothing.

I am hurt, I am emotionally scarred for ever. I don’t have a solution but I know this should never, ever happen in a “civilized” nation. May God be with those who have directly been impacted, which should be all of us. May God especially be with the direct survivors since those children will be scarred for all time. And finally may God be with our country as a whole. FDR once said, “a date which will live in infamy.”

Back in Black with stripes: On the Floor Again, Thunderstruck

After being on the “disabled” list for several weeks, was I ever excited to be on the road officiating high school basketball. Being on the “unable to perform” list for officiating is not where one wants to be but it is where I had to be for the first couple weeks of the season.

First time back and I found myself in Show Low, AZ assigned a junior varsity boys’ basketball game and a girls’ varsity basketball game. When the games were with Alchesay High School my heart did one of those beat irregular things. So most of you know that I was an assistant principal at Alchesay for the previous two year prior to retiring and it was my favorite work assignment of all time. Truly an amazing experience with an amazing group of high school students. So with all that being said, I found myself in the locker room prior to game time just a bit nervous with butterflies in the stomach because I knew that these games would be very emotional for me. No not because of the officiating part but because of all the memories that would flood my senses.

Sure enough as I walked down the hallway towards the gym, I hear those “hey Mr. Fruit” sounds from just about everywhere. It really impacted me emotionally as I was saw so many students and was able to say hello, hug, shake hands, and so on with. As most reservation teams do, the fans follow the team and usually become the home team  in attendance even though they are on the road. Doing a JV game usually might be low key, this one was a thriller as Alchesay won by about 4 points. To literally know each and every one of the players was something special. To have the specials smiles and hellos just warmed me up.

The varsity girls game was really something. To see all those young ladies that I had known and not ignore me but really go out of their way to say hello just about floored me. I was blown away. The two teams had an epic battle for 3.5 quarters with Alchesay coming on strong in the 4th quarter to pull away.

To visit before and after the game with so many young people made me realize that yes I had impacted many students in such a positive way. I can’t even explain how I felt. I was on an emotional roller coaster that kept me welling up with some pride and a whole bunch of hidden tears. I realized that not only did I impact the kids in a positive way but they had really impacted my life in ways I can never ever explain.

Most people know that I often times prior to games plug myself into some music that gets the blood flowing and gets me ready for the game. Headphones in, game face on, I oftentimes listen to a special song from a group that gets my adrenaline rolling. My officiating partner through the 90’s was a good friend that currently lives in Idaho, Ted Pettet. Ted knows what I’m talking about because we sort of lived for this song. So to Alchesay High School, I want you to know that you left me “Thunderstruck”!

Trouble Man: Taxes, Death, and Trouble

I have been kicking back and listening to one of my all time favorite voices, the late great Marvin Gaye. Nobody sang quite like Marvin and he really speaks to my frame of mind. His song “Trouble Man” just might be describing you and for sure it is describing me. His voice is so soothing but you know this song was his life. Some of those lyrics are part of my life. So 40 years ago when I was just a teen in high school I was laying on my bed listening to this guy. Who could have thought that he is as relevant today as he was in ’72. Marvin sings his heart out on this song, and I’m thinkin’ that there really is only three things fo’ sure: taxes, death, and trouble and if you know me I sure didn’t make it playin’ by the rules. Taxes aint quite my thing but trouble, well that seems to follow me. Just check out the song and get a bit lost in Trouble Man.

I come up hard, baby
But now I’m cool
I didn’t make it, sugar
Playin’ by the rules

I come up hard, baby
But now I’m fine
I’m checkin’ trouble, sugar
Movin’ down the line

I come up hard, baby
But that’s okay, cause
Trouble man
Don’t get in the way

I come up hard, baby
I’m in for real, baby
Gonna keep movin’
Gonna go to town

I come up hard
I come up, gettin’ down
There’s only three things
That’s for sho’
Taxes, death and trouble, h’oh!

This I know, man, is
This I know, sugar
Girl, ain’t gon’ let it sweat me, baby

Lincoln: The Movie

Today I ventured out for a matinee movie with my daughter, Jordyn. I suppose this is one of the advantages of not being employed as in retired that you can go to the less expensive matinees. With that being said, this was the first movie I have been to since I retired at the end of June. Now Jordyn and I decided to go see the Steven Spielberg directed movie, Lincoln. Jordyn and I had a special interest in seeing this movie since we through our genealogy are related to the greatest president of all time, on my mother’s side, Abraham Lincoln.

The movie takes place mainly during January of 1865, as President Lincoln is seeing that the end is near for the Civil War. He has the 13th Amendment on his mind as he works to pass the Amendment through a Congress that is a tough one to get the required two thirds vote. Daniel Day-Lewis is brilliant as President Lincoln and surely he will be nominated for an Oscar. The supporting crew is masterfully put together with Tommy Lee Jones turning in a special performance as Thaddeus Stevens. Sally Field is fabulous as Mary Todd Lincoln. The dialogue between the President and Mrs. Lincoln is beyond fascinating.

This may be the best and possibly the most accurate of all historical biographical movies. Spielberg weaves a dramatic masterpiece that left this viewer an emotional wreck. Truly President Lincoln was the greatest and Spielberg makes it clear that Mr. Lincoln new how to lead by his courageous stands on issues and how he did reach across the aisle for true bi-partisan support. Any current or past president who invokes the name of Lincoln in describing their own presidency and leadership is committing blasphemy in my personal opinion. They just don’t compare.

One can only imagine how President Lincoln would have contributed if he had not had his life cut short by an assassin a few months after making sure that slavery was abolished and the Civil War over. Surely the Civil War Reconstruction would have gone much better as President Lincoln was never about getting even or punishing those who had opposed him.

Watching Congress work in January of 1865 is beyond fascinating. Don’t think for a moment that partisan politics weren’t going on back in those days. It is quite ironic to note that it was the Republicans who were on the side of abolishing slavery while the Democrats opposed the Amendment.

Great lessons in history and this movie completely left me in tears. Why? As I have tried to state, one can only imagine what he could have accomplished if allowed to live and complete a second term and probably would have been elected to a third term. For me that was an emotional sequence of “what if?”

If you haven’t seen the movie, you need to. It is hard for me to imagine that some teen vampire movie literally sells more tickets then an immediate classic about the greatest President who ever sat in the oval office. That is an America that disappoints me that we would rather watch a teen vampire flick then something that should be a teaching moment for all to see.

Elections over: Are You Ready for Some Football

Forget all the election stuff and lets focus on what really represents rural America and that is Friday Night Football. The past two weeks have found me in Holbrook, AZ, you know the place that has the teepees for motel rooms. Anyhow, another close game and just plain fun. 6 to 6 at the end of the 3rd quarter and Round Valley scores 2 late td’s to win the game 20 to 6. Was it ever cold.

Fast forward to last Friday, playoffs have begun and the crew that I work with, Dan Waring, Joe Merklin, TJ Ortega, Shane Walker, were back on the field for some playoff action. Beautiful night and sure enough the tough man crew (minus me) is all into their $75 officiating shirts that just happen to be short sleeved. Our white hat, Dan and umpire Joe are New Jersey boys. They like to take the I’m tougher then you route and of course being the old guy on the crew, I just take the lets be warm route. So that means, short sleeves for them and me, long johns, thermals and a not so fancy long sleeved ref shirt with gloves on my hands. After all is was in the low 50’s at kickoff.

But I digress. The teams were Fountain Hills at Show Low and Show Low won the battle. I of course work with the chain side which puts me with the visitors. What a great bunch of coaches and kids as they never gave up and displayed great sportsmanship the entire game. Oh long sleeves (me) and short sleeves (everybody else) had a great time.

Working with Ed Hochuli’s brother, ok want to be brother, Shane is nothing but good times. Shane works out and has the big ole biceps while the rest of us are sort of scrawny in that department. So we call Shane, Ed and it all good,

Most memorable part of the game? We come out after halftime and one of our senior members had a senior moment and left their flag in the locker room at halftime. Comical but it all worked out. Like I told him, Fountain Hills wishes you had left your whistle there as well. Ok, the penalty flag reappears and life goes on.

So to wrap up a great evening I spend the night at the white hat’s house, have some tasty beverages, and watch Third Day on the Tonight Show. What a great wrap to great evening. Another 90 mile trip for some good times.

Back to my original point, the election process may be over for this year, but high school sports continue and it makes rural America the place to be on a Friday night. If you missed it, check out Third Day with their rocking new song “Hit Me Like a Bomb” off a rocking new album Miracle. My friends from Atlanta have never sounded better. Great, great performance! It is at 37:40 into the Tonight Show from Friday November 2, 2012. So to my officiating crew, You hit me like a bomb.

Check it out, You will like it. http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/video/friday-november-2-2012/1422708/

Another Homecoming: Payson vs Coronado

Another Friday night football game and I believe my 4th homecoming game this year and this was a real nail biter. It was homecoming night for Payson High School and in someways a homecoming for me as it was the first time this year I have had a Payson varsity football game. The weather was simply fabulous for a Friday night. Getting out on the field prior to the start of the game was sort of thrilling. Walking around, talking with coaches, staff, and others was most interesting. They even played some AC DC during the pre-game and you know I was loving that.

Having Don Heizer as the athletic director sure has improved how officials are treated at Payson High School. He has implemented an ambassador program where students from the DECA program meet the officials and escort them to and from locker room areas and they provide a nice sandwich type of meal for the officials. I can honestly say that officials really do appreciate the hospitality and it sets a nice tone for the evening. So my hat is off to Mr. Heizer and the job he is doing as the athletic director. The students were great and friendly and it really is a great program that he has put in place.

Working the chain side was fun as the local Payson Chapman Auto group ran the chains and have done so for many years. Working with a variety of chain crews, I can honestly say these guys are at the very top.

Payson had a commanding lead at halftime with a score of 20 to 0. Coronado came roaring back and after trading scores, were down 28 to 26 and went for 2 with just a few minutes left. A bad snap to the QB ended that opportunity and Payson still led 28 to 26. Coronado botches the onside kick as the kicker fooled everybody including his coaches by kicking it deep. Somehow, someway, Coronado uses its last time out with about 2:30 left in the game. It is 3rd down and a long distance to go for the Longhorns. Inexplicably, Payson passes the ball and it falls incomplete, stopping the clock and forcing the Longhorns to punt. I’m thinking this could be a fantastic finish as Coronado had scored on all but one or two possession in the second half. Payson punts, the Coronado player calls for a fair catch and the ball hits him in the chest, bouncing on to the ground with Payson recovering. Game over.

I have to admit, it was a fun game. The head coach of Coronado, was on my sidelines and he had some funny comments that I sure enjoyed. He was pleasant and respectful and just seemed to enjoy football. Not only that, he had some of the best one or two liners I have ever heard on the sidelines. My favorite was after he had called a timeout on fourth down and the play resulted in a big loss and the ball being turned over to the Longhorns. “Tim, whoever called that play after that timeout should be fired.” Of course, the coach had called the play. There was other similar comments and I sure enjoyed working with him.

Another great game and great time and to think I was paid to work. I would call that a successful homecoming for me.

Town Hall Debate: My take on Round 2

I like many others watched the “great” debate and what I took out of it was probably different then most. I was embarrassed for the candidates. You might call it a debate but I call it a civil war. Yep, there was little or no civility displayed and little respect for each other.

In my opinion, I think the undecided voter is minimal, with no more then 2% truly undecided. There is a distinct difference between the candidates no matter what side you support so I just can’t imagine many are truly undecided.

In my opinion this debate was the worst I have ever watched. Asked questions turned in to rhetoric by both candidates with not much substance. I don’t know or care who might be declared the winner of this production because I was disappointed in how they handled themselves. I found myself cringing at times as they looked like angry birds pecking away. They both acted like Joe Frazier fighting against Ali. They circled each other,  being overly aggressive, swinging wildly and I the voter was the one pounded into the corner. I am punch drunk with a mild contusion from all the blows below the belt.

In the end, neither scored a point with me. In some ways, I am probably like the majority of you, I know who I am voting for and these things make little difference to those of us who have already made up our mind. For me it was like watching a Hollywood production, choreographed from the start. When I think about it, in Hollywood, they would call it a stinker or a bomb.

So from that wild Axel Rose, I have stolen these lines from a song Civil War

Look in the doubt we’ve wallowed
Look at the leaders we’ve followed
Look at the lies we’ve swallowed
And I don’t want to hear no more

I was Thunderstruck: Friday Night Football in the White Mountains

Snowflake vs Round Valley. Snowflake Homecoming. Big Game. Once again it was Friday, and time to get out on the road traveling as the traveling man. Nice cool evening for football with a full house in Snowflake. Snowflake has been improving week by week and led by one of the true gentleman in the coaching ranks, Ron Tenney.

On the Round Valley sidelines you have former University of Arizona linebacker who played for the Seattle Seahawks for several years and who is no stranger to small town football as he came from St. Johns High School in St. Johns, Arizona. Marcus Bell had taken the head coach position last year and being a very small program has had to play teams from schools with much larger populations. His team was sort of like David in taking on another Goliath.

Coach Bell had his team well prepared and his kids played their hearts out. 0 to 0 at the end of the first half. Hard hitting and a fun game to work. Snowflake scores and Round Valley comes back and ties Snowflake and we head to OT with the score 7 to 7. Snowflake wins in OT 14 to 7 in maybe one of the best games I have ever worked.

Snowflake overcame some critical penalties that negated some big runs and even a score. They never gave up and eventually secured the win with an interception in the end zone to end the game.

When you get on the road and travel 90 miles each way to get there, you better be doing it because you like the game and tonight was a classic. After the game, our officiating crew got to stop by Shane Walker’s house and he fixed us dinner. No not any ordinary dinner but steak, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and some chocolate chip cookies that his wife had made. It was great. What a great finish to a great game.

Speaking of Shane, he grew up in Round Valley and him and his family have recently moved to Snowflake. He works in Show Low. I told him he could end up being the most hated man in the mountains since he has ties everywhere. His Dad even told me to let him know that he might not be welcome for any family reunions for another 10 years. Funny stuff that happens that nobody ever knows about.

Thank God for some good ole Friday Night Football. Of course, I jump back in the car, head down the highway, dodge the elk, finally arriving home.

Almost every time that I have been in Snowflake, the PA system blasts my favorite AC DC song, Thunderstruck. Once again, it was playing through the speakers in Snowflake, AZ. I know when the song comes on, I get my game on. So in honor of Snowflake, here is Thunderstruck.

Turn the Page: Refereeing on the Road

Growing up in the 1970’s in the midwest, I became a huge Bob Seger fan and I am to this day. I often find myself on the road cranking up the Seger I grew up with. One of my very favorite albums was Live Bullet which in my opinion was one of the best live albums ever released. Live albums were quite the thing there for awhile as Kiss Alive, Frampton Comes Alive, and many others were released during the late 70’s early 80’s.

So maybe some of the Turn the Page lyrics don’t fit but I know those lonesome highways and wishing the trip was through.

On a long and lonesome highway
East of Omaha
You can listen to the engine
Moanin’ out his one note song
You can think about the woman
Or the girl you knew the night before
But your thoughts will soon be wandering
The way they always do
When you’re ridin’ sixteen hours
And there’s nothin’ much to do
And you don’t feel much like ridin’,
You just wish the trip was through

Here I am
On the road again
There I am
Up on the stage
Here I go
Playin’ star again
There I go
Turn the page

Being a high school referee sure isn’t like being a rock star but here I am on the road again. Leaving Payson at 10:30 Friday morning and getting to Cibecue which is located on the White Mountain Apache Reservation about 130 miles from home for a 2:00 homecoming game. This is the second time I have been to Cibecue this year and they play their games in the afternoon on an 80 yard field and it is an adventure. Arriving fully dressed since dressing facilities are located a long way from the field, you have a choice of portable toilets to use. Small crowds and it is always fun to see these teams from the city traveling into land unknown to them.

The Cibecue Wildcats may not be great but they sure have good kids. I have gotten to know the quarterback and he is a great athlete and this year crowned the homecoming king. We had fun with that. Not every day you work a game with a king. The game ends with Gilbert Christian winning by a good margin but the sportsmanship was fantastic and everybody seemed to leave happy.

Parting company with my fellow officials, I push on to Whiteriver, the headquarters of the White Mountain Apache Tribe, for my next game with a different crew, and to Alchesay High School where I had worked the previous two years. I stop by and see my old home in teacher housing where Roy Sandoval still resides and we get to visit for awhile before heading to Alchesay.

I sort of knew that returning would be an emotional time for me as it really was the best time of my working life. Seeing Bridget Bones, Janice Massey, Ryan Walker, Peggy Yazzie, (those from the office) was quite an emotional reunion for me. Then of course other teachers, staff and I am already sort of feeling the love. Then the students. Oh my goodness, what a homecoming for me. They were as friendly as could be and I couldn’t have been any prouder to be able to see and talk with them again. So maybe being a referee is not like being a rock star but you know I sure was feeling the love.
They announce the officials prior to the game and I got this rousing ovation which gave me goose bumps. The game was a blowout as Blue Ridge crushed the Falcons but the kids never gave up and I was proud of their efforts.

So back on the road and our crew stopped by Dan Waring’s house for a great time of friendship and food. After visiting for a good time, it was on to Payson finally crawling into bed about 2:00 a.m.

But the story goes on as I crawl back out of bed to go ref youth football games that start at 8:00 in the morning and five games later, which is about 6:00 I am finished. I’ve been doing this youth football stuff for 30 years and it wears you down. I can’t even explain to you the agony and the pain associated with doing 5 games with only 3 officials. The last game was a thriller as the local Payson team won on a long pass play with about 20 seconds left to pull out a 6 point victory. Leaving the field, just beat to death, it all comes back around as some intoxicated parent approaches me and then starts berating me that I did all I could do to keep Payson from winning. Friday night ovation, Saturday a beat down. Yep, here I am on the road again, there I am up on the stage, here I go playing star again, there I go, turn the page.
